And it is not merely political anecdotes either. Take for instance "Hansel and Gretel". Wikipedia tells me that the story told in H&G "was probably an admonishment of the hardships of Medieval life".
Also abandoning children in the woods, mostly during episodes of famine, war, plague etc. to die or fend for themselves was not unknown.
Somewhere down the line changes were made to make the story less unpleasant. For example, in the first editions of the tale there was no stepmother; the mother persuaded the father to abandon their own children. This change appears to be a deliberate toning down of the unpleasantness, for children.
